This November we have been holding a food drive for Fish Food Bank in Ellensburg.  As a project based school each project must serve to educate us in multiple subjects.

I looked for ways to incorporate the Common Core State Standards for grades K-3.  Kindergartners have been practicing counting by ones, twos and fives and sorting the food that has been coming in by size, weight and shape.   First and second graders have compared greater than and less than (canned vs. dry goods, today vs. yesterday) used tally mark math to count donations by 5’s (one day we got 89 items!), worked on collecting data and graphing it on a bar graph as well as estimating and adding single and double digits.  Third grader Liam, has been building a line plot and subtracting our current tally from our 100 lb goal and eventually after we surpassed it, from our 200 lb goal.  We also learned about converting ounces to lbs and weighed our food.
